The function of the cardiac or cardiovascular system is to pump oxygen-rich blood to the organs, tissues and cells of the body and to remove carbon dioxide and waste products. It also transports nutrients such as amino acids and electrolytes as well as hormones. Abnormal proliferation and regulation of cells in the cardiac system contribute to the development of cardiovascular diseases.
