Glycosylation of G-CSF is important in increasing its stability, and therefore biological activity, by preventing its inactivation by serum due to proteases and alpha (2) macroglobulin.

It increases the production of neutrophils by stimulating proliferation and survival of specific bone marrow precursor cells and their differentiation into granulocytes. G-CSF production is inducible by cytokines including TNF-alpha, IL-1, GMCSF, IL-17 and IL-4.
