Schwann cells, or neurilemma cells, also known as neurolemmocytes, are the main glial cells that produce myelin sheaths around neuronal axons in the peripheral nervous system (PNS). Their function is equivalent to oligodendrocytes in the central nervous system. Neuropathies involving Schwann cells include: Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease, Guillain-Barré syndrome (acute inflammatory demyelinating multiple radiculopathy type), schwannoma disease, chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy and leprosy. Specifically, Schwann cells are involved in many important functions of peripheral neurobiology, including:

Schwann Cell Lines
  • Conduction of nerve impulses along axons
  • Nerve development and regeneration
  • Nutritional support for neurons
  • Production of extracellular matrix of nerve
  • Regulation of neuromuscular synaptic activity
  • Antigen presentation to T lymphocytes

Creative Biolabs provides a series of research tools needed to study the function of Schwann cells. Our product portfolio includes cell lines from multiple species, optimized serum-free media, reliable cell differentiation media, media additives, key cell markers and research antibodies.
