GelGreen nucleic acid gel stain

GelGreen nucleic acid gel stain

GelGreen is a fluorescent nucleic acid gel dye that combines high sensitivity, low weight, and exceptional stability. It is used for the visualization of DNA and RNA in agarose or polyacrylamide gels during electrophoresis, compatible with standard fluorescence detection systems such as gel scanners and gel imagers, also compatible with real-time PCR systems and can be used for DNA quantification.

GelGreen is considered a safer alternative to ethidium bromide (EtBr), as it offers several advantages:

  • Fluorescence: GelGreen is a fluorescent dye that interacts with nucleic acids and emits fluorescence when exposed to a source of ultraviolet (UV) or blue light. This fluorescence allows nucleic acids separated in a gel to be visualised and photographed.
  • Safety: GelGreen is considered safer than ethidium bromide. Sensitivity: It is often used to detect relatively small amounts of DNA or RNA, making it a popular choice for molecular biology research.
  • Applications: GelGreen is commonly used in techniques such as gel electrophoresis, PCR (polymerase chain reaction), DNA sequencing and other applications where visualisation of nucleic acids is required.
  • Method of use: It is usually added to the gel prior to electrophoresis or to the migration buffer to obtain an appropriate concentration of dye.
GelGreen has become a popular choice for nucleic acid staining due to its safety, sensitivity and ease of use. It is particularly common in molecular biology and genetics laboratories, where visualisation of DNA and RNA is essential for many experiments and analyses.
