Brain Heart Infusion broth - Non-selective liquid media for microbiology

Brain Heart Infusion (BHI) Agar is a non-selective microbiological culture medium. It is used for the culture of a large number of microorganisms, including bacteria, yeasts and filamentous fungi.  It is a versatile, isotonic and tryptose-rich medium (a mixture of meat and milk peptones) used for the detection of free coagulase (a thermostable Staphylococcus enzyme allowing the formation of fibrin clots, coagulation) and thermostable Staphylococcus DNAse. The rich nutritional base of the beef heart and calf brain infusions and the mixture of peptones provide nitrogen, vitamins, minerals and amino acids essential for the growth of various micro-organisms. Dextrose is the energy source of carbon and sodium chloride maintains the osmotic balance.
Brain-Heart broth can be supplemented with defibrillated blood for the isolation and cultivation of pathogenic fungi.
