Description | Cholesterol (cholesteryl alcohol) is a natural product that is the major sterol in mammals and an agonist of estrogen-related receptor α (ERRα). Cholesterol is widely found in the cell membranes of animals and is also used in the synthesis of several important hormones and bile acids. |
In vitro | Within the body, cholesterol can be reabsorbed. It is metabolized into the gastrointestinal tract in an unesterified form via the bile secreted by the liver. Approximately 50% of cholesterol metabolism typically involves reabsorption by the small intestine back into the bloodstream. |
In vivo | The tetrahydric structure of cholesterol is advantageous in reducing the fluidity of the cell membrane, with all molecules in the trans conformation except for the rigid plane of the cholesterol side chain. This structure of cholesterol decreases the permeability of the plasma membrane to neutral solutes, protons, and sodium ions. Cholesterol serves as a precursor for the biosynthesis of bile acids, steroidal hormones, and vitamin D. It regulates membrane fluidity within physiological temperature ranges. Cholesterol's hydroxyl group interacts with the polar head groups of sphingomyelin and phospholipids, while its bulky hydrocarbon chain and steroidal structure are embedded within the membrane among the non-polar fatty acid chains of other lipids. By interacting with the fatty acid chains of phospholipids, cholesterol increases membrane packing, thereby reducing membrane fluidity. |
