More Information
Description Collagen is the main structural protein in the extracellular space and is the most abundant protein in the ECM. Collagens are divided into two classes - fibril (types I, II, III, V) and non-fibril (types IV, VI). Type VI collagen is one of the major components of skeletal muscle and white adipose tissue extracellular matrix and is abundantly expresses by skin fibroblasts. Type VI collagen mutations are associated with Bethlem myopathy and Ullrich congenital muscular dystrophy. Type VI collagen consists of α1(VI), α2(VI), and α3(VI) chains as well the more recently identified α4(VI), α5(VI), and α6(VI) chains with α4(VI) being nonfunctional in humans.
